3 Things to Add to Your Author Budget

Do you have an author budget? (Hint, you should). There are a number of standard expenses that each of us may need to consider for the coming year, depending on where we are in the lifecycle of creating and promoting our books. Some of those expenses include:

  • Printing and shipping

  • Illustrations

  • Editing

  • Event travel

  • Giveaway Items

Beyond those general expenses for publishing a book, here are 3 things I recommend you consider for your author budget.

1. An Email Provider: Email marketing is such an important tool for authors! It's a great way to stay in touch with readers, promote your work, and sustain book sales. There are so many email providers to choose from, so I encourage you to look around. I personally love Flodesk (the platform you are looking at as you read this email!) because of their beautiful templates and easy to use features. Plus, it totally fits within my monthly budget. You can use this link to check out Flodesk for just $19/month.

2. A Social Media Scheduler: Scheduling your social media in advance is an incredible time-saver! I don't know about you, but I certainly don't want to hop on my phone every single day thinking, “Hmm, what should I post right now?” That's why I spend 1 hour each week planning and scheduling my content. Check out the different options out there to see which one you like best. I've used a few, but Planoly is by far my favorite scheduler! And at just $9/month, it's definitely budget-friendly.

3. Training and Professional Development: I think this is one of the most important and most overlooked items in an author's budget! I set aside about $400/year for trainings because I know that learning from others makes me a better writer and better entrepreneur. Plus, it's a tax-deductible business expense! Definitely something to keep in mind.
