I am a firm believer in creating your own brand as an author. Let's face it, there are a lot of authors out there- traditionally published, self-published, indie-published, and so on. You need to stand out.
One of the ways you can stand out is by being consistent and recognizable. And this can start with color.
Finding the Right Colors for Your Brand
Part of selecting brand colors is to ask yourself, “what do I want people to think or feel when they see my work online?” For me, I want to convey an image that is bright, cheerful, and relatable.
Does the idea of selecting colors for your brand (or the idea of creating a brand) make you a bit uneasy? Let’s break it down a bit.
How to Choose Your Brand Colors
First, what colors are you naturally drawn to? What colors show up around your house- in your rugs, pillows, lamps, little decorative items around the house? How about your closet? Do your clothes tell a color story? Looking to your surrounding for color inspiration can be a great place to start. Plus, it can really help with future photos if you are already surrounded by your brand colors!
Second, do some brief research on Color Psychology to see if the colors you have in mind are a good fit for your work. For example, blue tends to tell a story that is calm and trustworthy. Orange conveys warmth and positivity. Gold is the color of charm and luxury. Again, think about what messages you are trying to express through your work.
Third, call in some expert help! Don’t feel like you have to figure this out all on your own. Websites such as coolors.co and design-seeds.com have great online tools to help you mix and match ideas into an incredible brand color palette.
